From Lamine
For me the metaphor of teaching is a tree. The big ideas are the roots and the essential questions are the trunk and those transferred through the branches become the fruit and the fruit is understanding.
From Davies
The big idea is like an inverted cone filled with water with an opening at its tapering end. It is the big idea that gives the confines within which the essential questions, topical questions and transfer are crafted and carried out respectively leading to understanding in the end. From the metaphor, it is clear that the big idea is the overall, then we narrow down to essential questions, topical questions then finally to understanding to the whole class through a process of transfer of knowledge.
From Jewel
Big idea is a house, essential question is the sun shining at the house, understanding is the bricks needed to build that house and transfer happen when bricks are put together to build that house.

My metaphor is globe-like, meaning that there are different layers. The highest one symbolized by the 'Big idea'.Once what you have in mind is clear, this will lead to the Essential Questions to ask to impact learning positively. That will bring about Understanding which is proven through Transfer of knowledge in real-life contexts.
From Philmeon
Metaphorically, the big ideas, essential questions, knowledge transfer and understanding can best be illustrated in form of an inverted cone or a delta. It is like a river flowing into the sea as show below. The big ideas are like rivers flowing to the sea and understanding is like the sea itself that is reached through a process of knowledge transfer.
From Zineb
The big idea is in the gift, if we show this for the students, they will all ask several questions about what there is in the box, once we open the it, there is nothing, they Will understand that the idea is how to pack a gift and not what is in. The transfer will be realized by their learning how to make the same thing.
From Rachel
The atom in this picture represents Big Ideas. Just like an atom, scientist John Dalton perceived atom as an empty circle. His discovery of atom is quite vague and abstract and so with the Big Ideas. They do not know that there are unseen concepts and content that resides within. This atom (Big Ideas) serve as the doorway through which scientists explore theories and facts after many studies and experimentations. As we dig into it, scientists discovered that there are parts inside the atom. The outermost parts that surrounds atom are electrons, its forces and its locations represent essential questions that later lead to more specific core ideas. Electrons as essentials would give us knowledge the relationships how they bond and arrange inside the atom, that represents the transfer of ideas from one setting to the other which through scientific studies lead us to the bottom which is the core ideas. The core ideas are represented by the nucleus of the atom where protons and neutrons resides. These sub-atomic particles inside the nucleus is very important for it is the part that gives most of the mass of an atom. The unravelling of the core ideas (protons and neutrons) would give us a deeper understanding on the property of an atom how it behaves thus, one can understand an element.

When I created this metaphor
first I thought about a big idea with an overarching goal. Then I realized that
it was too wide and I had to keep focused in the result =
understanding/learning. So, I narrowed the idea. When we do that, we are able
to transfer knowledge and finally accomplish the result, the understanding, the
light!

Big Idea is central essence of teaching. All the other aspects revolve around the big idea. Essential questions lead us to perceive the big idea by sparking us to transfer the acquired knowledge in unseen situations and that leads to understanding.

The Big Idea is the core or principle center of the lesson. All other basic ideas are connected by this central principle.

ReplyDeleteHahaha, thank you Ahlam! I like your bicycle! Wanna tell me what it means?
DeleteWe are all waiting, Ahlam. You are keeping us in suspense!
ReplyDeleteoooh Rachel! so sorry hehe after you've seen mine, tell me what do you think?
DeleteMy metaphor is a Greek Salad. The big idea is to make a Greek Salad . Essential questions is basically the whole ingredients that one decide to put in the bowl to create a Greek Salad. To understand how to prepare the ingredients: whether to cook it or put it raw involves topical question and transferring. Finally, by putting everything including the salad dressing, Understanding is achieved and a greek salad is ready to be served.
